A sampling of the maps, papers and transcripts created before, during and after the construction of the reservoir from the archives of the Ulster County Clerk, Honorable Nina Postupack, County Clerk and held on the occasion of Archives Week in New York State, October 11-14, 2005, at the Ulster County Records Center.
2005 marked the 100-year anniversary of the passing of Chapter 724 of the Laws of 1905 that allowed for reservoir construction and the County Clerk’s Office took that opportunity to host researchers throughout the week to view original Ashokan Reservoir related record series.
The exhibit features a Cloth Notice “Notice of Application for the Appointment of Commissioners of Appraisal” and the “Affidavit of Posting”, as well as the Board of Water Supply Maps for Section 9 in the vicinity of Shokan, West Shokan and Brodhead. The exhibit illustrates where cloth notices were posted on property taken to provide “pure and wholesome water” for New York City.
A Finding Aid to the “Ashokan Reservoir Transcripts” is available online at http://www.co.ulster.ny.us/archives/AshokanFindAid.pdf and available at the Records Center.
