FROM: ULSTER COUNTY PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE DATE: September 12, 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SEPTEMBER 12, 2003 Completion of a Comprehensive Transportation Plan for Ulster County Ulster County Legislature Chairman Richard A. Gerentine has announced the completion of a Comprehensive Transportation Plan for Ulster County. The plan looks forward 20 years. Its recommendations, policies and projects will insure that a multi-modal transportation system capable of meeting the mobility and safety needs within the county and connecting the region is put in place. The completion of the plan comes at a critical time with the recent formation of the Ulster County Transportation Council (UCTC). This committee was formed as a result of federal requirements when portions of Ulster County were designated as an urbanized area by the 2000 census. UCTC is charged with planning for the transportation needs of the county and is required to adopt a Comprehensive Transportation Plan. Chairman Gerentine, who is the Chairman of UCTC, states, "The recently completed plan offers a significant headstart in meeting the federal requirement." Funding for the plan came from federal, state and county sources. "I would like to extend my appreciation to the Advisory Committee that guided the development of the plan and the citizens and officials that provided input during the five public hearings and surveys conducted on the plan," stated Chairman Gerentine. The Ulster County Planning Department was responsible for the administration of the plan’s development. Copies of the plan are being distributed to local governments and will be available on the county website ate www.co.ulster.ny.us. "The plan’s vision is to provide a safe and efficient multi-modal transportation system that supports the present and future needs of residents, visitors, and businesses of Ulster County and the region. The plan will strengthen preferred land use patterns, protect the environment, and will enhance our quality of life at a publicly acceptable cost," concluded Chairman Gerentine.
