Chairman Richard A. Gerentine presided over a very solemn Legislative Session last evening in remembrance of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The "Pledge of Allegiance" was led by the Town of Esopus, Post 1298, Honor Guard. Legislators Joan Feldmann and Robert Wilkins led everyone in singing "American the Beautiful." Legislator Alice Tipp, Chairman of the Community Services Committee and Legislator Brian Hathaway, presented a remembrance proclamation to Post 1298 Commander Ira Weiner.

Chairman Gerentine thanked Legislators Feldmann and Wilkins for their vocal tribute and gave a special thanks to the Town of Esopus Post 1298 Honor Guard. "The passage of time will not erase the pain and devastation which were felt by the citizens of our beloved country. Today, we thank God for the unity in our country and for the courage and commitment of our leaders. We pray that God will watch over our brave men and women who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and in other parts of the world. God Bless America and all its people," stated Chairman Gerentine. "I assure Ulster County residents that its government is committed to their safety and protection, and all measures possible are being taken towards this goal," concluded Chairman Gerentine.

Chairman Richard A. Gerentine called upon Legislator John Naccarato, to present a Proclamation designating "50 Flags to Kitty Hawk Day" to members of the Experimental Aircraft Association. John Morrow, Lou Edwards, Gary Mullighan, Bruce Snow, Joe Hayes, John Martino, Juliette Cosh and Roger Cosh were presented the award.

Chairman Richard A. Gerentine called upon Legislator Joseph Roberti, Chairman of the Public Health Committee to present a Pride of Ulster County Awards to Robert Horton and Christina Biladou in recognition of winning the storyboard contest on second hand smoke/restaurant law changes.

Chairman Richard A. Gerentine called upon Legislator John Naccarato, Chairman of the Criminal Justice/Public Safety Committee, to present a Pride of Ulster County Award to Fred Heppner in recognition of heroic efforts in saving the life of four-year old Rachel Swed.

Chairman Richard A. Gerentine called upon Legislator William McAfee, Chairman of the Public Works (Buildings and Grounds) Committee, to present to Harvey Sleight, Commissioner of Buildings and Grounds, a NACO Award for the Matthewis Persen House restoration program.

Chairman Richard A. Gerentine called upon Legislator Alice Tipp, Chairman of the Community Services Committee to present to Kathryn Puglisi, Director of the Ulster County Office for the Aging, NACO Awards for the Forkfull of Flavor and Healthy Eating for the Holidays programs. Legislator Alice Tipp and Kathryn Puglisi also presented a Pride of Ulster County Award to Curtis Van DeMark in recognition of being presented the New York State Legislature’s Outstanding Achievement Award.

The next meeting of the Ulster County Legislature will be held on Thursday, October 9th, 2003 7:00 P.M. in the Legislative Chambers, on the Sixth Floor of the Ulster County Office Building, 244 Fair Street, Kingston, New York.
