November is National Family Caregivers Month

Ulster County Legislator Alice Tipp, Chairman of the General Services/Community Services Committee has announced that "November is National Family Caregivers Month." "At Ulster County Office for the Aging we salute all the caregivers in our county and recognize the many challenges they face daily in caring for their loved ones," stated Legislator Tipp.

In 1993 we had to explain what family caregiving was. Today, the role of family caregivers is clear and their difficulties are acknowledged. National Family Caregiver Month (NFC Month) – observed every November – and is a nationally recognized month that seeks to draw attention to the many challenges facing family caregivers, advocate for stronger public policy to address family caregiving issues, and increase the community programs that support family caregivers. NFC month is the time to thank, support, educate, and celebrate more than 50 Million family caregivers across the country.

Here are some ways the Ulster County Office for the Aging supports caregivers:

    • Caregiver Support Groups offered the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at the Ulster County Office for the Aging at 12:00 noon.

    • Monthly Caregiver Support Group meetings are held at the Hudson Valley Rehabilitation and Extended Care Center in Highland.
    • The Ulster County Office for the Aging maintains a resource library.
    • The Ulster County Office for the Aging will host a Caregivers Workshop on Friday, November 19th, 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Developing Effective Communication Skills with Health Care Providers. The workshop will be held at the Central Hudson Community Room on Route 28, Kingston. Lunch will be provided. The workshop is free however; you must pre-register by calling 340-3456.
