Kingston, NY—Kirk Shultis, Jr., age 34, of Saugerties, pleaded guilty to Burglary in the Second Degree, a Class C Violent Felony, on April 22, 2024 before the Honorable Bryan Rounds in Ulster County Court. Defendant decided to plead just moments prior to the commencement of jury selection for his trial scheduled to begin Monday morning.

In pleading guilty, Shultis admitted to burglarizing a home in the Town of Saugerties between September 21 and September 22, 2022.  The Town of Saugerties Police Department led the investigation resulting in defendant’s arrest in December 2022.

“Crimes like the burglary committed by this defendant have the impact of degrading a community’s sense of security,” said District Attorney Emmanuel C. Nneji. “I commend the collaboration with Saugerties Police Department in this case that has resulted in a successful prosecution, and reiterate our Office’s commitment to vigorously prosecuting such cases.”

The case is being prosecuted by ADA Sohil Sharedalal who also serves as the Animal Crimes Unit Chief and General Felonies Bureau Chief Robert Knapp.  Defendant is represented by attorney Matthew Mahan of Marlborough, NY.

Sentencing in this matter is scheduled for July 8, 2024.
