Apply for a Master Electrician's License

Requirements

  1. Applicant must have a minimum of 7 years’ full-time work experience in electrical construction including residential, commercial, and industrial AND one of the following:
    • 4-year apprenticeship and 2-years of hands-on work
    • Journeyman Electrician with 2-years hands-on work using own tools
    • Degree in electrical engineering; master engineering or BS in electrical engineering with 3-years hands-on work using own tools
    • High school equivalent with vocational school graduation in wiring, installation, design, or applied electricity with 6-years hand-on work using own tools
    • Passing grades in college courses leading to degree in electrical engineering shall be credited with 50% of curriculum years (up to 1-year credit of practical experience) and 6-years hand-on work using own tools.
  2. Applicant must be a competent electrician and qualified to do electrical contracting, construction, and installation of electrical wiring of all types.
  3. Applicant must be familiar and able to comply with the provisions of the National Electrical Code, National Fire Protection Association, and the local utility company, (Central Hudson) specifications for electrical installations.
  4. Applicant must take a written exam of which a mark of 75% is required to pass.
  5. Applicant must provide a photocopy of valid government issued photo identification.
  6. Grandfather clause: EXPIRED 12/31/2022
  7. A license will be issued after all requirements are met and applicant is approved by the Board, including a passing test score. Applicants for Master Electrician’s Licenses shall provide proof of Workers’ Compensation Insurance (Statutory covering all operations and locations), Disability Insurance (or proof of exemption thereof on a CE-200 form), and Commercial General Liability Insurance ($1,000,000 per occurrence with an aggregate of $2,000,000).

Each application must have the child support certification(PDF, 45KB) completed signed and notarized as well as the Affidavit certifying the information to be true and correct.

Step 2.Submit Application

Please print, complete and sign your application before submitting (this includes copies of any supporting information you may have such as other licenses). 

The application fee is payable by check made out to the Ulster County Commissioner of Finance.

Step 3.Interview

If required, the applicant will be interviewed at a determined time and place specified in a notice from the Board.

Step 4.Exam

If you’re approved to take the exam a fee of $125.00 is required. A letter will be mailed to your residence advising you of the exam dates.

Step 5.License Fee & Insurance

Once a passing grade is received on the exam you will receive a letter advising of the license fee and at this time your Insurances certificates will be required.*

*After all requirements are met and applicant is approved by the Board applicants for Master Electrician’s Licenses shall provide proof of Workers’ Compensation Insurance (Statutory covering all operations and locations), Disability Insurance (or proof of exemption thereof on a CE-200 form), and Commercial General Liability Insurance (1,000,000 per occurrence with an aggregate of 2,000,000). Failure to submit proof of Insurance within 30 days of the Board’s approval will result in a suspension of the license until such time as proof of insurance is provided.

Master Electrician 

Tests consists of 26 multiple choice questions, with a 120-minute time limit

A grade of 75% or higher is required to pass this exam

  • The first 10 questions are valued at 2 points each
  • The remaining 16 questions are 2-part questions, the first part is the multiple choice, which are valued at 2 points each, the second part requires the complete article and/or table to be cited from the 2017 NEC code book, the citing’s are valued at 3 points each

Read instructions carefully

  • For each question, circle the correct answer. Only circle one answer. If you change your answer, draw an X through the answer you do not want to select
  • List the article, and/or table used to arrive at your conclusion on the line below your answer for the last 16 questions
  • Show all math calculations or explain your conclusion on the line below your answer
  • All correct multiple-choice answers are valued at 2 points each, so answer all questions
  • Citing’s are valued at 3 points each so a minimum of 8 correct citing’s are required to achieve a passing grade.

  • New York State has adopted the 2017 NEC standards as of 05-12-2020
  • All test questions are based on the requirements of the NFPA 70 2017 NEC code book

The Schedule of Fees for the Ulster County Electrical Licensing Board were adopted by Local Law No. 3 of 2019 and the Electrical Licensing Board's Rules and Regulations
