Green the Scene

Green the Scene provides event coordinators with the resources they need to succeed in a zero-waste event. The program includes a lending library of disposal bins and signage, and training materials to help make implementation simple. Eligible events can also apply for professional assistance with planning and on-the-ground coordination.

Skip The Straw Law

The Ulster County "Skip the Straw Law" makes single-use plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery and condiment packets on-demand items at eateries and establishments across Ulster County. The law went into effect in December of 2019 and it covers all of Ulster County.

Sustainable Materials Management

Ulster County government promotes sustainability by reducing waste production, reusing and recycling old materials, and following green procurement policies when new materials are purchased.

County Composting Pilot Program

In 2023, Ulster County began food scrap composting programs in its two largest buildings, the County Office Building and the Development Court building. The County's goal is to divert 100% of its organic waste from landfills and incinerators by 2030.

Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger is proud to announce that Ulster County has joined the New York State (NYS) Green Purchasing Communities Program (GPC) as one of seven local governments in the state to join this initiative.
