Ticket to Work Program

If you receive Social Security disability benefits and are interested in getting back to work or increasing your work activity, the Ticket to Work program can help you find meaningful employment and become self-sufficient again.

These services are provided at no cost to recipients. Even if you are unable to work full-time, this program may be an option for you.

How it Works

Step 1.Get your "Ticket" from Social Security

If you are a Social Security beneficiary at least 18 years old, and not yet 65, you have a "ticket" that can be used at a participating Employment Network (EN).

Step 2.Choose an Employment Network to assist you in your return from work

An Employment Network (EN) can be a private or governmental agency that has been approved by the Social Security Administration as having the right expertise to assist people who receive Social Security disability benefits in returning to work.

The Ulster County Career Center is proud to serve as an approved Employment Network for Ulster County residents. We offer a variety of high quality services to people with disabilities who are interested in returning to work or working for the first time.

For a full list of Employment Networks you can choose from, visit choosework.ssa.gov/findhelp.

Step 3.Meet with your Disability Resource Coordinator

During the meeting, you'll learn more about the opportunities and support we can offer you. We can discuss any questions or concerns you might have about the program. If you decide you want to work with us, we'll help you "assign your ticket" to the Ulster County Career Center.

To schedule a meeting, contact Michael Thomason, Disability Resource Coordinator by email or phone:

Step 4.Develop an Individual Work Plan (IWP)

Once you assign your "ticket" to the Ulster County Career Center, we give you individualized attention and provide support specific to your needs. Together, we will develop an Individual Work Plan (IWP) that clearly outlines the services we will provide to you to assist you in your return to work.

Services may include:

  • Career Counseling
  • Resume Development
  • Individual Job Development
  • Rights & Responsibilities Under the ADA
  • SSA Disability Benefits Advisement

Step 5.Receive Long-term Follow-up Support

Once you find a job, you will typically continue to receive follow-up services from us for a number of years. We want to be make sure your transition back to work is a success!

If you lose a job while working with us, we will be there to assist you in finding new employment.

If you have questions about your Social Security benefits, we will provide you answers directly, or through our relationships with trained experts.

We understand the return to work can be difficult, but we are ready to help you!
