KINGSTON, NY - The Ulster County Department of Emergency Services – EMS Division successfully hosted the New York State EMS Leadership Training Course on January 31 and February 1 at the Ulster County Public Safety Training Center in Kingston. The 16‑hour program was delivered by instructors from the New York State Division of State Emergency Medical Services and developed with support from the New York State Office of Rural Health.

The training focused on strengthening leadership capacity within the EMS community, using the NEMSMA Seven Pillars of National EMS Officer Competencies as its foundation. Over the two‑day course, participants explored key leadership topics, including developing a learner’s mindset, understanding the distinction between management and leadership, leadership styles, personalized change planning, coaching and mentoring, and leadership in action.

A total of 22 EMS professionals from Ulster County and across New York State completed the program and received Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit. Attendees engaged in reflective exercises, crafted personal leadership statements, and learned strategies for fostering psychologically safe and supportive organizational cultures.

“Hosting this training is an important investment in the future of EMS leadership in Ulster County and across the state,” said Everett Erichsen, Ulster County Emergency Services Commissioner. “Strong leadership directly translates into stronger teams, better decision‑making, and ultimately better outcomes for the people we serve. We’re proud to support this level of professional development and grateful to our state partners for making it possible.”

Participants represented multiple Ulster County EMS agencies and fire departments, as well as departments from outside the County — reflecting a shared commitment to advancing excellence in emergency medical services statewide.

Given the success and value of the program, the EMS Division plans to offer the course again in the future to continue expanding leadership training opportunities for EMS professionals.

Ulster County extends its appreciation to all instructors, participants, and partner agencies for their dedication to strengthening emergency medical services and ensuring the highest level of care for residents and visitors.
