Green the Scene Technical Support

Food Scraps

Apply for direct planning support and boots-on-the-ground coordination to help implement zero-waste practices for your festival or event.

Together, we can prove that zero-waste events are achievable, fun, and the future of events in our community.

This year, Ulster County is partnering with Diversion Designers, a zero-waste consultant with years of experience in the field and expertise planning dozens of events across the country.

Eligibility

  • Events must take place in Ulster County and include a clear goal for waste diversion. Priority will be given to events with strong public outreach, partnerships with compost vendors or haulers, and those implementing Zero Waste policies.
  • Events must be sponsored by a municipality or 501c3/501c6 non-profit.
  • Because the program intends to divert food waste, eligible events must have either 1,000 attendees or at least 5 food vendors and/or bars.
  • Your event must have at least one food vendor partner.

Requirements

Program Requirements

  • Already have or are willing to set a volunteer program to help manage waste receptacles  and diversion efforts during your event.

  • Budget and capacity to source compost, recycling, and landfill haulers, including three-stream waste stations that support proper source separation and diversion goals.

  • Have adequate space, or be willing to create space, for a waste sorting station and three-stream collection containers. Events must agree to maintain standardized three-stream waste stations (compost, recycling, and landfill) throughout the event site. Inconsistent single-stream or dual-stream collection stations are not permitted, except in restroom areas where a single stream can be used.

  • Use Ulster County approved or provided signage for all waste stations.
