Flyer for the event

On Wednesday, March 11, from 2–4 PM, Ulster County will host the grand opening of a new archival exhibit, Women Shaping Democracy in Ulster County, at the Nina Postupack Archives Gallery on the second floor of the Ulster County Office Building. Remarks will begin at 2:15 PM. The event is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served.

The exhibit features original voter registration books from the first elections in which Ulster County women cast ballots, offering a rare and powerful glimpse into the local expansion of suffrage. Newly curated materials from the League of Women Voters of the Mid-Hudson Region and the Ulster County Archives will also be unveiled, highlighting the first women elected to local office and tracing the lasting impact of women’s leadership in shaping democracy in Ulster County.

Featured speakers will include Ulster County Clerk Taylor Bruck, Ulster County Elections Commissioner Ashley Torres, Chief Diversity Officer Dina Suggs, and Cindy Bell of the League of Women Voters of the Mid-Hudson Region.

This exhibit invites residents and visitors to reflect on the evolution of women’s civic engagement — from newly enfranchised voters signing their names in poll books for the first time to women stepping forward as candidates, public servants, and community leaders.
