A Message from the Office for the Aging Director

Dear Ulster County Older Adults!

Half a year done already! It flew by and the heat is here to remain for a while. Make sure you all hydrate yourselves!

We have lots going on in July – some new presentations to help with financial document management and we have groups asking for specific subjects which we do try to accommodate those as best we can.

Where we are lacking is in drivers for our volunteer driving program. We have less drivers than ever and, unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate some of the requests for transportation to medical appointments. If you like to drive and want to give of your time (you do get paid mileage door to door), please consider driving for our program. We have increasing demand each month, and a dwindling supply of drivers. If we can’t accommodate your request, individuals will have to find other transportation and may have to pay privately for this, and many cannot as it is a hardship. It’s not really a sustainable model of transportation when folks do not volunteer. We are also searching for volunteer warm callers – folks who make phone calls to isolated older adults who ask to be called weekly. It is a wonderful way to get to know someone, and a gratifying yet simple way to make a connection.

We are always also looking for folks who are comfortable teaching technology to older adults, who might want to help in our weekly tech class on Thursday mornings. In addition, we seek volunteers who wish to make a more personal connection with individuals, on a one-on-one basis, by helping with our Respite Program here in our Senior Hub each week (Social Club at the Hub).

Thanks for hearing me out – as stated above, OFA is very needful of volunteers at this time and I hope you find something you might like to do! Please call our office for more information and/or an application.

Stay well and enjoy the summer!

Susan Koppenhaver, Director, Ulster County Office for the Aging
