Tax Arrears Assistance

Ulster County DSS Property Tax Arrears Assistance

Ulster County DSS Property Tax Arrears Assistance may help eligible Ulster County homeowners pay overdue property taxes when their primary residence is at risk of tax foreclosure. This assistance is provided through New York State’s Temporary Assistance program and is administered by the Ulster County Department of Social Services. Homeowners do not need to be receiving ongoing Temporary Assistance to apply.

Eligibility is based on the household’s individual circumstances, including income, available resources, the amount and status of the property-tax debt, and whether payment would prevent foreclosure. Applicants may also be asked to show how they will manage future property taxes and housing expenses. Assistance may be limited, and some payments may be subject to repayment.

Homeowners should contact Ulster County DSS Temporary Assistance Unit at (845) 334-5440 as soon as they receive a tax-foreclosure, redemption, or auction notice. Applying for assistance does not automatically stop a foreclosure proceeding, so applicants should provide copies of all notices and deadlines and seek legal or housing-counseling assistance when necessary.
